I hate to admit it, but if there is one thing I am not - it's handy. I don't have lots of power tools and if I did, I probably couldn't use them. To tell you the truth, I couldn't tell you the difference between a buzz-saw and a jig-saw.
However, sometimes if called to action - I can get the job done. And it's those moments that make me feel good - like a real friggin' man. I had one of those moments recently when I had to replace the toilet seat (we won't tell anyone that I had to replace it because it cracked when I sat on it - thus I joined the Y). Nonetheless, I went to Lowes and as soon as I walked in and smelled the lumber and paint I could feel it - I knew I was about to do something manly. I walked (with your Mom) to the back where the toilet seats were located, and to my amazement there was quite a selection. That's when I learned that there are two pretty standard types of toilet seats - circular and elongated. We needed elongated and we picked-out the perfect seat. I also learned that you better check what you're getting before you purchase it or you may end up with one of those squishy seats, and as fun as that may sound, I think they're kinda gross. I picked our throne, purchased it, and headed back home. True, it wasn't the same as buying some 2x4s to build your own deck, but it still felt good to walk out of such a manly store with a purchase.
We got home, and I went into the bathroom and began doing my business - assembling the new toilet seat that is.
1. Remove the old toilet seat - Check!
2. Assemble/attach new toilet seat to toilet bowl - Check!
3. Clean up mess - Check!

It was as easy as that! 1-2-3! But oh so gratifying.
Emerson, I can only hope you're more handy than I am when you're older, but if you're not - who cares?! I'm confident that when something needs to get done, you'll get it done. If not, you're Mom will probably do it. And if she can't do it - pay someone.

erin...I am very impressed. pretty sure I would have paid someone...but every once in a while I surprise myself. You have inspired me...next time I am doing it myself!
